MARA Technology Displayed at Dive and Travel Expo - Tacoma Washington May 3, 4 2008

Scuba diving is a relatively safe sport enjoyed by millions, but each year there are five to six hundred serious diving accidents worldwide. Many of these accidents are connected with decompression sickness known as "The Bends", which happens if a diver ascends too quickly from a dive. However, there is now a new device that may make these types of accidents a thing of the past.
Meet MARA, a "Miniature Ascent Rate Alarm" made by Canadian company Master Underwater Technologies Inc. Bright yellow, and about the size of a box of matches, MARA fits on any divers mask and sounds a series of alarms if it detects a diver is ascending too fast. It sits right beside the divers ear so the messages are only heard by the diver wearing the device.
The underlying technology for MARA works by detecting changes in water pressure and analyzing those changes against time and electronic dive tables. If the device detects the divers is ascent over 30 ft per minute it sounds the alarm warning the diver to slow down. There is also a safety stop at 15ft of water, which is recommended by many dive training organizations.
The technology was developed by an ex-Canadian Military Clearance Diver, Tim Stevens, who has been training military and civilian divers for over 29 years. Stevens says's there is a real need for a product like this, especially for the casual diver that only goes down a few times a year. "There are many things to remember when you are diving, and if something goes wrong it is a natural reaction to bolt to the surface. I have witnessed too many accidents and close calls that could have been avoided with a simple safety device like this".
Stevens is hoping this MARA will become a standard piece of equipment, just as important as a compass and knife or even a dive buddy. Already the device is getting some traction with Diving Instructors. Les B. Newman, CGA, PADI-Master Instructor, says "As an instructor, I appreciate the safety and simplicity of being able to maintain ascent rate standards without having to take my eyes off my student. While it will cannot replace my dive computer, the MARA system provides an audible ascent alarm that I have come to reply upon telling me whether I am ascending at 30-40-50 or 60 feet per minute ".
MARA has been available since November of 2007, but still few divers are aware of the new device. The device will be on display at the Northwest Dive and Travel Show May 2-4th at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Centre.
